A Four-day Martial Arts Spectacle Highlighting the Strength of “One Base”

(Macau, 15 September 2024) The four-day “SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships 2024” took place in Macau from 12 to 15 September, featuring wushu elites from 23 Asia-Pacific countries and regions who participated in the competition, showcased the spirit of wushu and promoted the essence of Chinese traditional culture. A total of 41 Asian championship honours were announced, with Team Macau, China captured 11 medals. Team China demonstrated extraordinary prowess, capturing 18 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR, this event was organised by the Wushu Federation of Asia (“WFA”); undertaken by the Wushu General Association of Macau (“WGAM”); co-organised and title-sponsored by SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”); co-organised by the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government (“MSB”); and supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government (“DSEDJ”), as well as the Macao Government Tourism Office (“MGTO”). A closing ceremony and celebration dinner was held at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau today, marking a perfect end to this international martial arts grand spectacle.

Apart from Team China and Macau, Chins, several teams performed excellently in this year’s competition, demonstrating their understanding and passion for wushu, which serves as a testament to the international recognition of Chinese martial arts. Team Iran emerged atop the medal board, securing a total of 15 medals, comprising 7 golds, 3 silvers, and 5 bronzes, making them one of the standout winners of the competition. Team Vietnam captured 14 medals, while Team Hong Kong, China also achieved great results with 12 medals.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Chan Weng Kit, President of the WFA, stated, “this championship has served as a valuable opportunity for international exchange. Wushu athletes from across Asia have not only honed their skills and strengthened friendships but also promoted understanding and respect among diverse cultures. This cross-cultural exchange and integration align with the core values advocated by WFA and is the direction of our collective efforts.” He added, “WFA will continue to uphold the mission of ‘inheriting wushu culture and promoting wushu spirit,’ driving the popularization and advancement of Wushu in Asia and beyond. We look forward to collaborating with wushu organizations worldwide to accelerate the internationalization, standardization, and regulation, making it a bridge and bond connecting people from different countries and regions.” He especially thanked SJM for their meticulous preparations and warm hospitality, injected new vitality into the development of Wushu in Asia.

Ms. Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM, congratulated all athletes, remarking, “It is truly a joy to witness the sustained high-level performance of teams from various nations and regions, all of whom vividly demonstrated the resilient spirit of wushu. The Asian Wushu Championships play a crucial role in promoting this significant aspect of Chinese cultural heritage, and SJM is proud to co-organise such an event. Our consistent support for wushu over the years has not only nurtured new talents but has also enhanced Macau’s international collaborations in martial arts, enriching our resources and network to bolster the development of ‘One Base’ and ‘City of Sports.’”

The “SJM 10th Asian Wushu Championships” featured 23 Taolu and 18 Sanda events. Approximately 400 wushu elites from 23 countries and regions participated in the competition, including Australia; Brunei; China; Hong Kong, China; India; Iran; Jordan; Japan; Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Korea; Saudi Arabia; Malaysia; Myanmar; Nepal; Philippines; Singapore; Sri Lanka; Turkmenistan; Chinese Taipei; Uzbekistan; Vietnam, and Macao, China.

The full competition was broadcasted on SJM’s official Facebook Page, allowing wushu enthusiasts to watch the athletes’ fantastic performances. Highlight reels from the intense competition were also showcased at the celebration dinner, enabling guests to relive the athletes’ impressive performances. Throughout the evening, teams relaxed from the rigors of competition, enjoying lively conversations and sharing experiences from their trainings, forging deep friendships and capturing memories with group photos.
